Is Ameribar a good bar review course to take? I am a repeat taker and took both Barbri & PMBR which did not help much. Please advise.

If Barbri/PMBR didn't work for you, then I will just stop looking at a class bar review and start looking for a personal tutor who can give me more personal feedback. Maybe you can ask a friend who has just passed the bar exam to help you identify your problems?

    Hi -

My name is Dion Sullivan and I have been preparing people to sit for the bar exam for 17 years. I am based in Washington, DC. While I work with people on local bar exams, I also work with people on other bar exams since so many people in DC are not from here (including me - I'm from New York). I successfully prepared a client for the MO bar exam this past summer. The essence of my approach is the use of materials I developed that have put the subjects in question and answer format. This requires active learning and leads to a much finer understanding of the law, as well as better recall on the bar exam. To preview these materials, please go to www.barexamstrategy.com. Click on the "repeating the bar" link and then on the "sample questions" tab. The multistate book costs $299.95. I have also developed materials for many of the MO/MEE subjects such as agency, partnership, corporations, federal procedure & jurisdiction, sales, commercial paper, and secured transactions. These materials cost $150.

My fee for private bar preparation is $300/week. This includes a two-hour session where we go over the material, review essays/MPTs or multistate questions, or a combination of all three. I also provide each client with a study schedule that is tailored to their particular needs and time constraints. As I do this, I also keep track of each client's progress. At a glance I can see how many times a subject has been reviewed, how many essays have been written in each subject, how many multistate questions have been done, MPTs, etc. The study schedule is drafted week by week and reflects your progress. The fee also includes the time I spend grading essays & MPTs. I try to spot trends in the essays/MPTs, both good and bad, and call these to your attention. I can meet most anytime you want insofar as bar preparation is my full time job. We can meet on weekends or evenings. But, these time-slots fill up first (and some are already gone) so if you have a particular time you would like to meet, please let me know as soon as possible so that I may reserve it for you.

Insofar as we are in different cities, I want to say that I have had at least 20 clients over the years who I have never actually met since they were so far away. They have been in California, upstate New York, New York City, Texas, western Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I also work with my local clients over the telephone when bad weather prevents them from coming to my office. If you have a telephone, email and access to a fax machine, we can work together. My success rate is outstanding, and there is no difference between my "remote" clients and the ones I meet face to face. If you would like to speak with some of my former clients, just let me know and I'll arrange it.

If you are interested in working with me, I would recommend getting started as soon as possible. It takes a while to gear up to take the bar again and to establish a rhythm for studying. Also, the winter is peppered with holidays, and many people get colds and the flu. As far as studying is concerned, November is only three weeks long, and December is only two weeks long. Optimally, you want to be proficient in all of the multistate subjects by Jan 1, 2008. Many of the multistate subjects form the basis of the MO/MEE subjects, so I like to start with the mbe subjects.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact me at your earliest convenience at dionsullivan@verizon.net or at 202 364-5292.

I took Ameribar for the Florida exam. I thought it was very good. The outlines were shorter than Barbri's (a little), but were on point. The lectures were good. They tracked the outline materials so I would suggest focusing on the outlines. I read the outlines, and did tons of practice questions. I passed and paid less than half what my friends paid. I also called them a bunch with questions and they were helpful. That's my opinion. Good luck on the exam.

I think BARBRI was awesome in terms of preparing me for the MA bar. Did you actually stick with the paced program?

Nadra-- i hate to say, but it is probably your study plan/methods that are preventing you from passing. You do not need more materials or bar reviews- you need to write essays and do MBE's and review the answers.

Do you know where your weak spots are?

if your plan is to read outlines over and over then that is exactly why you are not passing.

try new things-- try making flashcards, try making up your own mnemonic devices, outline essays and write out a full one every day.

take a hard look at how you prepared and i think you will see the problems,

    best wishes,

The problem that some have with BarBri and similar commercial review courses is that for it to work you have to follow its Paced schedule. Which is not always possible for someone to do. Many times people need something more, or something more suitable to their personal schedules.

Bar tutoring companies, such as Law Preps LLC (Law Preps LLC -Legal Education and Examination Preparation Experts) strive to provide you with a personalized approach. Not only will the tutors give you the motivation you need, but they will keep you on schedule and take into account that you have a lot going on in your life.

If the big commercial course didn't work the first time around, an alternative approach is the way to go. Again, a course such as Law Preps is great. You can take advantage of the one-on-one tutoring and small group workshops and feel confident that you can pass the bar.

BarBri is the best general bar review course. PMBR is the best MBE supplement course. BarGraders.com is the best essay supplement course. I advise you re-review your BarBri materials, especially the Conviser (should be enough actually), take 30-50 MBE practice questions a day for 4 weeks straight leading to the exam, and focus on your writing -- that's probably why you failed. Make sure to take the Failed Exam Review session with BarGraders so they can analyze where you failed and they will tell you what you need to work on. Hang in there. You will pass.

barbri is excellent for black letter foundation. take kaplan/pmbr to supplement mbe. take bargraders.com to supplement essays if you are in CA. if you are a repeat taker, do the Failed Exam Review service. i have recommended several people to take this course. hang in there. you will pass.
