In California a determination of good moral character is valid for two years.
When an Application for Determination of Moral Character is about to expire, in order to avoid completing that form again, an applicant must submit an Application for Extension of Determination of Moral Character (extension application). An extension application must be filed by an applicant no sooner than every 18 months and no later than every 24 months after an initial determination of good moral character has been made by the Committee, and after each subsequent determination, until such
time as the applicant is certified for admission to practice law in California.
Just as an anecdote-- my moral character determination took about 7 months for them to complete (and i am about as "square" as one can be). They estimate 180 days (approx. 6 months), with no guarantees.
