YES!!!!
YES YES YES!!! How else are you going to IM your friends if you don't have a laptop? Most professors make you turn off your cell phones...so only way that you can entertain yourself is by IMing your fellow students, playing solitaire, or reading the news.
There you go...I just gave you a recap of most of the past 4 years of my life (I got a JD and an LLM so that's 4 instead of 3 years). lol And yes I did manage to get pretty good grades!!!
Seriously though...a laptop is great for taking notes and exams (most schools now allow you to take your final exams on your laptops if you download examsoft ...you'll hear all about it during your first year). In my former law school out of about 100 people 95 used laptops during class on a daily basis. So I say go ahead and buy that laptop...however...if you are low on cash wait until classes start so you can add the cost to your student loans.
Good Luck!
I say yes.
I invested in a laptop, and I would never have survived without it. I don't use it to take notes in class, as I've found it distracts me. (Plus, if you're forced to re-type your notes, you're reviewing the info an additional time). But the laptop is invaluable for on-campus work. My school has a computer lab, but I like having my info in a place where I can access it at any time. It's great for briefing and outlining, and I've found that in the final week before exams, I'm too tired to hand write my practice essays and attack outlines.
