Do I need a tutor for writing a good bar exam essay?
I think you need to read about writing a good bar exam essay. It is definitely different from writing a good law school essay. However, practicing and matching up with the model answers I thought worthed more of my time than going to a tutor.
Tutoring can be very effective in helping students design a consistent, organized outlining approach. Outlining is very important in order to write a good bar exam essay answer because it helps students identify and organize relevant issues to get as many points as possible from the Grader’s checklist within the time allotted.

It completely depends on you as an individual.
1. Are you comfortable spotting issues?
2. Are you an organized thinker/writer?
3. Is IRAC your best friend?
4. Are you thorough in your analysis?
5. Are you a first time bar examinee?
If you answered YES to all these questions, you may not need a tutor. Many people pass the bar without one. If you answered NO to any of these questions, it may be worth your time and money (cost of retaking the bar is probably more than you would spend on one-on-one tutoring) to find a tutor that fits your needs.
Do your research and consider your situation and any past exam experiences...you will likely have your answer.

I think the posting by cabartutor is very intelligent. However, I think almost anyone can get some real benefit by spending a moderate amount of time with an experienced tutor on essay writing. I do the NY Bar, and have a great deal of experience as a law teacher and tutor, including 11 years as a writing instructor at NYU Law. Non-US Lawyers a specialty. Contact me at nybartutor@nyc.rr.com.
