Thread: Paul Pfau

I saw another post where people recommended Paul, but I want to know exactly how he teaches and the methodology he uses, Pros and Cons, etc. Details appreciated!

Here is why Paul Pfau is good and all the contact info:

I took Paul Pfau's Cal Bar tutorial, personally I think I would not
have do as well as I think I did, this last time. I took the Bar for
the first time in Feb 2006, July was my second time although I took
Paul the first time as well I did not follow his method like I should
have. I kicked myself in the ass after I received my scores, and after
taking him again I followed his method and I was better for it on the
July Bar.

The thing that I liked with Paul was that your essays are actually
graded with notes and promptly returned, within days. Your essays are
returned to you, not with check marks, but explanations of what your
doing correctly and incorrectly. Paul also covers every aspect of the
Bar including that crossovers, writing methods and issue cluster that
give a bang to a essay answer on the Bar. Also you could turn in as
many essays a week without and still get them back within days, so
that you could adjust your mistakes and practice your improvements.

Paul has been doing this for 30 years and his method works and he
knows to some extent what the bar will do, which is also helpful, like
he said that every time the bar makes a change the pass rate goes up.
Knowing this, after the new additions on the July Bar I made the
determination not to skip the July Bar it may make a difference .

Also, although Paul's always says that you should be prepared for
every subject he has a great prediction method he has been right on at
least 50% of the essay subject for the Feb and July Bar. So you go in
having prepared a little more on the subject that have a more
propensity to be on the next bar.

Finally, you can call him 24 hours a day and he will call back most of
the time within hours or within the 24 hours, or you can see him
outside of the lectures anytime all you need to do is make an
appointment and he is always available.

Anyway as you can read I really liked Paul and I thing he is a great
asset to any Bar applicant.

Holz was excellent

I attended the course up in Sacramento and thought it was excellent. Time is short on a performance test and Holtz gives you a lot of time-saving approaches. I'm not sure I could implement them nearly as fast as he indicates you should, but the speed with which I could implement his techniques is a lot better than floundering around with information overload and poor organization.

Holtz clearly walks you through a variety of examples and packs in a lot of concepts, so it is important to take notes so that you can review the exams that he covered. Also, the presentation is content-heavy with only some pep-talk and fluff. It is quite different from BarBri in that way. You get about 7-8 hours daily of lecture and guided walkthrough of the exams, making me think this course is a tremendous value for the money spent.I came away with a sense of confidence that I can rack up points in this area, providing some sense of calm as I return to my Barbri curriculum.

He is a very good teacher

I'm a repeater and I have taken John Holtz's 3-day performance test workshop. Although, I did not pass, I found John's course helpful both for the performance and the essays. My performance grade also improved after taking John's course, although I was not fully prepared to adequately digest and apply his method. I've also taken John for essay tutoring; John's a brilliant guy (he was a grader for BarPassers for over 10 years I think) and he's also a good person and really cares about students passing. He's not paying me to say any of this and in fact, he doesn't even know that I'm planning on taking the July 2007 exam

I also took Paul's course, but I did not find it as helpful as others did. The multistate review was basicially nonexistent. However, I took the Micromash Bar Review this time and absolutely loved it!

Not a great bar review course.
Better to stick with Barbri. Minimal critques given on essays.
Perfunctory and robot-like support. Better just do grab Barbri books and
practice practice practice. He is much too expensive and a poor psychological crutch.
