    Hi there,

Your Q: can an american studying law in asia take the baby bar exam?
To apply for the baby bar (First -Year Law Students' Examination), you must have a US Social Security number and register as a law student or as an attorney with the State Bar of California Office of Admissions. The First-Year Law Students' Examination is administered in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas in June and October each year (not sure if you will have difficulties going..).

Your Q: do i need to take it?
If you are already admitted in any jurisdiction, including foreign jurisdiction, the First-Year Law Students' Examination is not required.

An applicant who is required to take the First-Year LawStudents' Examination shall not receive credit for any law study until the applicant has passed the examination. An applicant who passes the examination within three consecutive administrations of first becoming eligible to take the examination upon completion of one year of law study, shall receive credit for all law study completed to the date of the administration of the examination passed. An applicant who does not pass the examination within three consecutive administrations of first becoming eligible to take the examination but who subsequently passes the examination shall receive credit for his or her first year of law study only.

A general applicant intending to seek admission to practice law in California must take the First-Year Law Students' Examination unless the applicant has satisfactorily completed at least two years of college work as defined by these rules; and the first-year course of instruction:

    (1) at a law school that was approved by the American Bar Association or accredited by the Committee when the study was begun or completed; and
    (2) the law school has advanced the person, whether or not on probation, to the second-year of Instruction; or
    (3) is exempt by reason of study in a foreign law school as provided by these rules

Your Q: if i pass the baby bar exam, does it make me a lawyer?
    No.

Your Q: if i want to take the california bar exam in the future, do i need to take the baby bar exam first to get the qualifications?
if according to the info above, you are required to take the baby bar, then yes.

    Hope that helps!! ^^
