Overview

The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations (QLTR) allow certain overseas lawyers and other UK qualifed lawyers to become qualified as solicitors in England and Wales.

There are usually two requirements that applicants applying under the QLTR are required to meet (depending on which primary jurisdiction they are qualified in) before they can apply for admission as a solicitor of England and Wales.
  • Pass the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (Qltt), and/or
  • Satisfy a two-year legal experience requirement (which includes experience of practising the law of England and Wales).

Qltt is the conversion test that enables certain lawyers to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales. CLT is fully validated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an accredited testing organisation for the Qltt.

Qltt Covers
  • Head One – Property: 3 hour written examination + 30 minutes reading time
  • Head Two – Litigation: 3 hour written examination + 30 minutes reading time
(CLT will only be running a Civil Litigation course, however delegates may take the Civil or Criminal Litigation examination)
  • Head Three – Professional Conduct & Accounts: 3 hour written examination + 15 minutes reading time
  • Head Four – Principles of Common Law: 30 – 40 Minutes + 30 minutes reading time give beforehand

  • UK – Birmingham, Oxford and Glasgow, and London with special discounted London accommodation rates when booking with CLT.

Eligibility

Prior to taking the Qltt test, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility issued directly from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Application materials will be included in your Qltt course kit. As this process takes at least a month, candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. (Please note: the Certificate of Eligibility is valid for three years and is not tied to a specific test date.)

As part of our customer service, Qltt professionals will review your letter of reference and suggest any changes to ensure that your application receives prompt Law Society approval. We also happily assist those seeking exemption from one or more exams (‘Heads’) pursuant to the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations 1990, s.14, “Distinguished Specialist Practitioners” or s.15, “Academic Lawyers”.
