Thread: US Law Enquiry

  1.   US Law Enquiry #1
    Hi there all,

I'm Chris, an Irish law student who has always been interested in becoming a lawyer in the

USA. I just have two questions to ask anyone who could answer please :

    (1) After passing the New York Bar Exam how can one call ones self a lawyer, because as you know

yourself in Ireland we have to do training before you can call yourself a solicitor. How could one be

prepared to represent someone in court when you have had no training? What exactly happens after you

pass your bar exam or what should you do?

    (2) If you pass your Bar Exam and things do not work out for you in New York can you return to Ireland

and work in a well paid legal job with that qualification??

If you could answer any of these questions I would appreciate it very much. Thanks!!

    Yours hopefully,

    A Very Inquisitive Law Student,

    Chris.

Chris- I don't know about #2 since I've never been to the mother country...

But for #1, once you have passed a bar exam in a state and are subsequently "sworn in" (usually within a month or two of the bar results) you are licensed in that state and can represent clients. The rules of professional conduct govern providing adequate representation to your clients.
If you, a new lawyer with your bar card hot off the press, took on a big patent litigation case (from the dumbest client in the world...who would ever give a case like this to a new attorney!?) and did a crappy job your client could sue you for your inadequate representation.
