Bar Exam

Hello Folks!
Can anyone tell me if attorneys from foreign country need pre-law study to prepare for bar exam? I am an attorney from India who started this research today. Will contact the law schools etc also...but maybe someone's been on this road before and can tell me...I did some internet research and it seems that each state has a bar exam...most other countries let an attorney appear in any court in the country and you can remain the member of the bar in your state. No such thing as multiple bar exam....and seems like California Bar exam is very tough...any better ideas out there??? thanks!

Re: Bar Exam

In the United States, the individual states determine who can practice law. Some states have reciprocity with each other-- California isn't one of these states (as in, CA does not take the fact that you passed another bar exam in another state as reason enough to admit you in CA).

Also, as a non ABA accredited law school attendee, you would need to take the "Baby Bar" before you can take the CA bar exam. See http://www.calbar.ca.gov/state/calba....jsp?cid=10115
for more California specific information.

CA is rumored to be the hardest exam in the nation. I am not sure i agree, as I have not taken every exam in every state. I have taken, and passed on my first attempts, both Massachusetts' and California's bar exams. CA is 3 days, as is NY. However, most states have only 2 day bar examinations.

Also, there is a difference between federal and state courts here, so you must be admitted to the federal court you plan to appear in (generally this is the case) even if you are a member of the bar in the state in which that court sits.

Expensive and LONG process to be admitted, esp. in CA-- so think hard before jumping in.

Best,

Re: Bar Exam

Thanks a lot! Your crisp and clear answer speaks of your intelliegence and that is why you passed both bars without any problem :-) so for you nothing should be difficult! I looked up the website www.lawtutors.net too...is that your business? Very informative...

Re: Bar Exam

Thank you.

I am an attorney instructor in California for LawTutors. We do one-on-one and small group tutoring both in person and remotely for bar exam students and law students.

Good luck,
