After reading about other people's experience on this board, I am starting to think about hiring a tutor. However, I am not taking CA or NY bar exam. Hi -

My name is Dion Sullivan and I have been preparing people to sit for the bar exam for 17 years. I am based in Washington, DC. While I work with people on local bar exams, I also work with people on other bar exams since so many people in DC are not from here (including me - I'm from New York). I have successfully worked with people on the Illinois bar exam. The essence of my approach is the use of materials I developed that have put the subjects in question and answer format. This requires active learning and leads to a much finer understanding of the law, as well as better recall on the bar exam. To preview these materials, please go to www.barexamstrategy.com. Click on the "repeating the bar" link and then on the "sample questions" tab. The multistate book costs $299.95. I have also developed materials for many of the Illinois/MEE subjects such as agency, partnership, corporations, federal procedure & jurisdiction, commercial paper, and secured transactions. These materials cost $150.

My fee for private bar preparation is $300/week. This includes a two-hour session where we go over the material, review essays/MPTs or multistate questions, or a combination of all three. I also provide each client with a study schedule that is tailored to their particular needs and time constraints. As I do this, I also keep track of each client's progress. At a glance I can see how many times a subject has been reviewed, how many essays have been written in each subject, how many multistate questions have been done, MPTs, etc. The study schedule is drafted week by week and reflects your progress. The fee also includes the time I spend grading essays & MPTs. I try to spot trends in the essays/MPTs, both good and bad, and call these to your attention. I can meet most anytime you want insofar as bar preparation is my full time job. We can meet on weekends or evenings. But, these time-slots fill up first (and some are already gone) so if you have a particular time you would like to meet, please let me know as soon as possible so that I may reserve it for you.

Insofar as we are in different cities, I want to say that I have had at least 20 clients over the years who I have never actually met since they were so far away. They have been in California, upstate New York, New York City, Texas, western Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I also work with my local clients over the telephone when bad weather prevents them from coming to my office. If you have a telephone, email and access to a fax machine, we can work together. My success rate with my "remote" clients is the same as the ones I meet face to face. If you would like to speak with some of my former clients, just let me know and I'll arrange it.

If you are interested in working with me, I would recommend getting started as soon as possible. It takes a while to gear up to take the bar again and to establish a rhythm for studying. Also, the winter is peppered with holidays, and many people get colds and the flu. As far as studying is concerned, November is only three weeks long, and December is only two weeks long. Optimally, you want to be proficient in all of the multistate subjects by Jan 1, 2008. Many of the multistate subjects form the basis of the Illinois/MEE subjects, so I like to start with the mbe subjects.
