MBE and CA Contract question RE firm offer

I have a contract question regarding firm offer "...a merchant's signed written offer is irrevocable for the stated time period (or, if not stated, for a reasonable time not exceeding three months)." Again, it seems like a firm offer may be held open for many years. I am concerned about this because the Feb 06 answer (on the bar web site) stated that although the offer was for 6 months, it was revocable at will after 3. Exactly half the answer turned on the definition of this rule.
