The possible subjects on the TN bar exam are as follows:

1. Constitutional law (United States and Tennessee).

2. Criminal law (substantive and procedural).

3. Contracts.

4. Torts.

5. Property (real and personal).

6. Evidence.

7. Civil procedure (United States and Tennessee).

8. Business organizations (including agency, partnerships and corporations).

9. Commercial transactions (Articles 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code).

10. Wills and estates.

11. Domestic relations or personal status (husband and wife, parent and child, marriage and divorce, etc.).

12. Professional responsibility.

13. Restitution and remedies.

14. Conflicts of law.

The BarBri essay book contains the TN essay questions for the past 17 or so years and BarBri's model answers. The law examiners board does not, as far as I know, release any answers, so you have to understand that BarBri's shot at it may not actually be what the law examiners are looking for. However, most are fairly close. It's best to have an understanding of the black letter law in each of these areas plus any significant Tennessee distinctions.

Thank you for your input. I will definitely go beyond Barbri's material. I am looking for some TE outlines and would appreciate if someone could pass them on. Also does anyone know which is the best review COURSE material for TE.

I'm not sure if there are a lot of choices in TN. I went to an out-of-state law school, so I was at a bit of an disadvantage. All I saw was PMBR and BarBri. PMBR focuses on the MBE. I didn't take it. I did take the traditional BarBri course. I felt that BarBri focused too much on the MBE at the expense of not focusing on the essay material but I did pass in the end. I guess with BarBri you just have to listen to the lecture material on the essay subjects and practice those essays on your own. We did not do any essays in BarBri. It also helped me to take some of the essay subjects during my last semester of law school because they were still fresh in my head. It was black letter, but it made learning any state distinctions easier.

so basically for Evidence and Crim Law, we can study the same outline made for MBE for the TN essay ?

Basically, but remember that there differences between TN law and the "law" you are learning for the MBE. Learning the black letter law first seemed to make it a lot easier to learn how Tennessee distinguishes from that "law."

I'd say that works pretty well for evidence -- learn the federal rules of evidence you need to know for the MBE and then learn the TN distinctions. They are similar. However, for criminal law on the MBE, you are learning black letter law -- which you will never see again after passing this exam -- and for the essay portion, you are learning actual state statutes. There seemed to be quite a few differences between TN criminal statutes and MBE black letter law.

I'd say the plan works best for things that haven't changed a lot over the years, like contracts and property and torts. Learn the MBE "law" and then learn the state distinctions. There are certain state applications to each subject that you will have to learn -- like how TN treats damages for torts and how TN applies its landlord tenant act for property. Even con law wasn't bad, once you got down the black letter law (which is based on actual federal case law).
